Narrative
Hippeastrum x hybridum ‘Cygnet’ is a tall bulbous herbaceous perennial. Bulbs are 4.0-5.0 cm diam at first flowering, maturing to 7.0 - 8.0 cm, producing 2-3 offset bulbs annually. Leaves are strap-shaped, green, two to four per bulb, 60-70 cm long, 5-5.5 cm wide. Scapes are 50-60 cm tall, usually 3 per bulb, each bearing 4-6 sweetly fragrant, sub-erect flowers per scape with pedicels 2-3 cm long. The semi-trumpet perianth is 14-15 cm long, laterally ca. 12 cm and dorsoventrally 13 cm wide. The six tepals are of medium texture. The outer tepals are 10-12 cm long, and 3.5-4 cm wide at their broadest; the inner tepals are 9.5-11 cm long, the inner laterals 4.5-5.0 cm wide; the ventral inner ca. 3.5 cm wide. The tepals are striated with rose-pink on their adaxial surface, with RHSCC red-purple 67C the closest match, most intense towards the margins and fading proximally to white towards the throat. A white underlay is visible along the keels. The tepals are similarly colored on their abaxial surfaces, with more pronounced white keels. The tube is infused green for most of its length. Stamens are 11 to 12 cm long, pink for most of their length, then white and ultimately green in the proximal 1.5 cm; pollen is yellow. The style is 12-13 cm long and colored similarly to the staminal filaments but lighter; the white tri-lobed stigma is ca. 6.5 mm wide. This a complex, fourth generation hybrid that began with a cross of two primary hybrids: (H. pseudopardinum x H. papilio) x (H. tucumanum x H. fragrantissimum), with further introgression with H. brasilianum.
