CHFA-251-HZ5 which is a random mating population that has a broad genetic base and is adapted to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5 of the tall grass prairie ecoregion (USDA Forest Service Ecoregion 251) of the Midwestern states of the USA. Plants of CHFA-251-HZ5 Partridge Pea are morphologically similar to those found in native prairies in the Midwest states of the USA. There is variation among plants of CHFA-251-HZ5 for both maturity and plant height. Depending on location, plants flower from July to September and seed is mature from mid-September to mid-October. It can be used as a base population for cultivar development by plant breeders or it can be used by companies producing seed of native plants as a seed source of known adaptation. Partridge Pea can be used in plantings for pollinators, wildlife food, conservation, and native flower gardens.

Description:
CHFA-251-HZ5 was developed from seed collected from Partridge Pea plants in eleven native prairies in Iowa (3), Missouri (6), and Kansas (2). Seed from the collections was used to grow plants from each collection which were transplanted into a seed increase and evaluation nursery. Seed from this nursery and subsequent plants was used to intermate the plant material for 3 or more additional generations to produce the germplasm population.
