Narrative
USDA-UTWH-102 has been evaluated at Panguitch and Millville, UT for winter injury and spring color. USDA-UTWH-102 winter injury at the Panguitch, UT was significantly less (P < 0.05) at 7.0 compared to orchardgrass cultivars Benchmark Plus, Latar, Paiute, Potomac, and Seco, but similar to Bruno (5.3). USDA-UTWH-102 (90 %) exhibited (P < 0.05) higher spring green color than Benchmark Plus, Bruno, Latar, and Seco, but similar to Potomac (76 %) and Paiute (66 %). USDA-UTWH-102 at Millville, UT had biomass production of 6.4 Mg ha-1, similar to the highest orchardgrass checks Paiute and Benchmark Plus (7.6 and 7.4 Mg ha-1, respectively). USDA-UTWH-102 did not differ for aftermath flowering when compared to the other orchardgrass cultivars.

Description:
The source population was 29 seed collections made from three areas in central Utah (1395 to 3288 m above sea level). Fifty plants from each collection were evaluated for three years for winter injury. Based on this evaluation 24 total plants (23 plants from ten of the collections and 1 plant from the cultivar Potomac) were selected for lower winter injury. The twenty four plants were clonally replicated to a polycross nursery. The resulting seed became USDA-UTWH-102.
