Narrative

Duhamel du Monceau (arb. fruit, 1768), described the "seedless medlar" and says it is preferred as being more delicate and of a softer texture than the common kind. Noisette (Man. du Jard. 1829) speaks of it as a singular fruit, but small and of mediocre quality. Don ( Gard. dict. 1832) mentions the stoneless medlar as bearing a small fruit of little merit, and Loudon (Hort.) gives the same description. In 1880 a French nursery catalogue (Transon Bros. Orleans, France) advertises a variety of medlar under the name of "Stoneless". -- E.L. Sturtevant. 1890. Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Club.
