Narrative
Tift-LHB pearl millet has very long panicles (panicle length ranges from 49.5 cm to as much as 72.0 cm, with an average of 59.7 +/- 6.3 cm), but the plants are dwarf in stature (average 107 +/- 9.5 cm) from ground to flag leaf) and are quite resistant to lodging. Because this is a bulk population, there is some diversity in plant characteristics, which will be useful for selection to develop new cultivars or hybrid parents. This germplasm carries resistance to root-feeding nematodes Meloidogyne areniaria (Neal) Chitwood and M. incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, and leaf spot (Pyricularia grisea). Tift-LHB is moderately susceptible to grain smut caused by Tolyposporium penicillariae Bref., with an average of < 1% smutted grains in 2014. This germplasm restores fertility in crosses with A1 cytoplasm. With adequate spacing plants typically have 2.9 +/- 0.7 productive tillers/plant, and 3.2 +/- 1.3 non-heading tillers/plant. The main tiller averages 13.5 +/- 1.6 leaves. Internodes are typically short; the fourth internode from the top averages 60 +/- 26 mm in length. The panicles are typically candle-shaped or cylindrical, and the rachis tip is usually exposed. Panicle diameter at the widest point (typically near the base) averages 26.3 mm +/- 3.0 mm; rachis diameter averages 7.95 +/- 1.3 mm at the midpoint. Grains are dense near the tip of the panicle, but are generally less dense near the base. Stigmas are mostly non-pigmented and anthers are mostly yellow. Mid-anthesis occurs approximately 60 d after planting, with a wide range of flowering times; Tift-LHB does not appear to be sensitive to photoperiod. Exertion of the panicle is typically negative (average -4.5 +/- 6.1 cm), but this is of little consequence with such long panicles. Grain color varies from cream to gray. Average grain yield per panicle is 33.9 +/- 11.1 g. The average 1000-seed weight is 11.2 +/- 1.1 g, giving an average of 3,024 +/- 861 seeds/panicle.
