`Desert Song? Flor de Junio (FJ) common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) (Reg. no. CV- , PI -) cultivar developed by Michigan State University AgBioResearch were released in 2014 as high-yielding FJ seed type adapted to northern production zones. Desert Song was developed using the pedigree breeding method to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease, agronomic, seed and cooking traits. In 3-years of field trials, Desert Song yielded 3522 kg/ ha, flowered in 41 d and matured in 100 d on average. Plants averaged 48 cm for canopy height, with lodging resistance score of 3.2 and seed weight of 36.2 g /100 seed. Desert Song combines high yield potential with adaptation to northern production areas. It possesses resistance to Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and intermediate resistance to race 22:2 of bean rust [incited by Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.:Pers.) Unger]. Desert Song produces seed that meets industry standards for packaging and canning in the Flor de Junio seed class.

Description:
Desert Song, tested as MSU bean breeding line R11801, was developed from the cross between MSU breeding lines X07712 and X07721. X07712 was derived from the cross of FM99016/Sedona; and X07721 was derived from the cross of Merlot/ FJ Marcela. The overall purpose of the cross was to develop locally adapted upright Flor de Junio seed type for production in temperate bean production areas.
