Narrative
Wild-type waxy (Wx) encodes granule-bound starch synthase enzyme (GBSS), which synthesizes amylose starch. The loss of GBSS activity results in grain lacking nearly all amylose. Release of this germplasm makes the two different waxy (wx) alleles, wxa and wxb, available in elite backgrounds used for hybrid grain production. wxa lacks GBSS (-) and wxb encodes a nonfunctional version of GBSS (+). The starch from both wxa and wxb grain contains nearly all amylopectin. Advantages of using waxy grain over normal grain for biofuel production include improved ethanol conversion efficiency. Waxy starch is used by the food industry to improve the shelf life of breads and cakes, and to create more stable pastes. Release of this germplasm will facilitate the production of elite waxy sorghum hybrids to provision the biofuel and food industries.

Description:
Normal B Wheatland with ms3 genetic male sterility was crossed with waxy B TxARG-1, followed by selfing and making four backcrosses with B Wheatland to make waxy B Wheatland. Waxy B Wheatland was backcrossed six times to A Wheatland to make waxy A Wheatland to form a waxy A/B pair (A N641 and B N641). Waxy R Tx430 (R N642) was developed similarly by crossing normal R Tx430 with ms3 genetic male sterility with waxy R Tx2907, followed by four backcrosses with normal R Tx430.
