Fruit large, 16-19 mm diam; Excellent production; spur-type tree; rust susceptible; fruit drops when ripe. Selection from the wild by J.S. Akin, Sibley, LA. -- Payne and Krewer, 1990.
Super Spur was dug out in the wild by J.S. Akin as a chance seedling in the swamps near Sibley, Louisiana. It is a very heavy, spurtype bearer; one tree bore 86 measured gallons in 1984. It is a Crataegus opaca with the fruit having a more than normal red color for its species. A very good variety. --T.O. Warren, 1990, History of Mayhaw Varieties, Pomona 23(3):69-71.
`Superspur is an upright tree that blooms in late February and early March and ripens fruit in late April and early May. The fruit is large with a light red/yellow skin and yellow flesh. Fruit firmness and fruit retention are poor. Its early bloom time resulted in light crops following the 1993 and 1996 freezes. `Superspur? is very productive in years without late spring freezes. -- Krewer and Crocker, 2000, Experiments and observations on growing Mayhaws in S.Georgia and N.Florida.
