RSD 1991001 and RSD 1991002 were seed lots collected in Vietnam (see Source History). Due to inconsistent propagations a number of years ago, certain selections of RSD 1991001 were renumbered as RRUT 92 - RRUT 98 . Only one seedling of RSD 1991002 germinated, and it was renumbered as RRUT 99. Seedlings and grafted propagations are maintained in the field in RIverside and Thermal (California) for observation and evaluation. Dr Trinh of Vietnam, who visited Riverside in 09/2000, indicated that the tree planted at CRC 12D-21-06 (ivno = 2913) resembled 'Nam Roi', an important pummelo in the southern portion of Vietnam. The fruit from which the seeds were derived were collected in the northern area, and apparently were grapefruit-like, wheras the fruit on the tree referenced were more pyriform. We also have a seedling population of 'Nam Roi' received from a different source (RSD 1995016, selections of which are RRUT 417 - 420). SInce pummelos are monoembryonic (as confirmed for these by molecular data), the significance of this is somewhat unclear. (RR Krueger, 02/12/2010)
