Narrative
Woolgrass is a facultative wet to obligate wetland plant native to the eastern US as well as several southwestern and northwestern states. Leaf River was collected near a small tributary stream that flows into the Leaf River in southeastern MS. It is a coarse, tufted, perennial sedge with short rhizomes and basal leaves that are up to 1.3 m long. Flowering stems are 1.5-2 m tall, obtusely triangular, leafy, with stiff hairs on their angles. Culm leaves are 60-80 cm long, 4-12 mm wide, somewhat folded, and have scabrous margins. Two or three leaf-like bracts subtend the inflorescence. The inflorescence is much-branched, dense, with long, drooping stalks and numerous bracts. Spikelets are solitary or in glomerules, sessile or with pedicels. Scales are reddish-brown, glabrous and wide-acute at the apex. Achenes are pale, tan, 3-angled, flat on one side and smooth. Perianth bristles 6, long extended beyond the scales, giving the inflorescence a reddish-brown, wool appearance at maturity. Flowering begins in June and seeds are mature by September.
