Narrative
Wild lupine is a perennial plant in the pea family, with showy blue (occasionally white and pink) upright spikes of pea-like flower. Each leaf is palmately compound, divided into about eight narrow light green leaflets. It grows to a height of 2 ft., blooming in May and June. This plant fixes nitrogen in the soil and has a very large taproot. Grows well on dry well-drained, infertile soils in clearings or edges of fields. Endangered Karner blue butterfly feed exclusively on wild lupine. The elevation is 300 ft. above sea level, plant hardiness zone 5, and soils are loamy, fine sands. Wild lupine can be utilized in landscape and restoration plantings, especially on drier sites, meadows and roadsides. Useful for habitat restoration and landscape in the northeastern Unite States. Drought-tolerant.
