Fruit large (6x4 inch), apple-green; tree/shrub to 15-20 ft with stiff branches, armed with sturdy spines and long toothed leaves. Native to China, cultivated in France and Germany. Deciduous shrub to small tree 2-6 m high. Branches brown, glabrous, with short thorns. Leaves elliptic to lanceolate, 5-10 cm long, 2-4 cm wide. Lamina dark lustrous green, margin finely serrate, base cuneate, apex acute to acuminate. 2-3 pinkish to white flowers in small fascicle in March-April.
