Perennial; up to 100 cm high; spikelet narrow, 8-25 cm long, spikelet set in 2 or 3; long, crouching underground sprouts; basal floral glumes on the spine usually are more or less pubescent, 7-12 mm long; stem underspike naked, often rough due to aciculae.
