Narrative
Best performing Arizona cottontop accession for stand establishment, vigor, seed production, forage production, and ability to spread in the 1976 Arid Land Grass Initial Evaluation Planting at the Tucson Plant Materials Center where first comparatively evaluated with 22 accessions of Digitaria californica. Also evaluated for ability to become established on retired cropland in 1993 at the Avra Valley Planting Site. Three planting depths were evaluated: 0.25, 0.5, and 1 inch. Showed no significant difference in average number of seedlings emerged per foot at the 0.25 and 0.5 inch planting depths. The 1 inch planting depth showed significantly fewer emerged seedlings in comparison with the 0.25 inch planting depth. Also evaluated in the Southwestern Borderlands Savanna Grassland Ecosystem Restoration Study beginning in 1997. Despite below average summer precipitation, performed well in terms of emergence and establishment in a severely denuded site. Documented as having beneficial qualities in terms of diet for wildlife and no negative impacts on wild or domestic animals.
