Environment description: Steep, rocky outcrop below the road in full sun, exposed to the wind. Growing in thick organic litter layer over stone. Slope: 80 percent. Aspect: East.
Number of plants sampled: 1
Associated species: Sorbus sp.; Picea sp.; Syringa sp.; Rosa sp.; Aralia sp.; Rhododendron sp.; Pinus sp., and numerous herbaceous taxa.
Comment: Single-stemmed, needled evergreen tree with conical habit. Height: 15 m. D.B.H.: 45 cm. Bark: gray-brown, with shallow furrows. Seeds collected from one plant. We found what appears to be adelgid on one stem, but no adverse affects; population is quite low; interestingly, there is a larch adelgid native to this region and we wondered if this might be the pest we saw on the hemlock; unfortunately, we didn't collect the pest--sorry. Six vouchers collected (NACPEC96-188). Not photographed.
