Environment description: Varied terrain on east bank of Onon River. Soils varied with microsite, but were generally fine sand along the river and sandy throughout the area, except where deeper soils had developed under tree overstory. 11% slope with a NW aspect.
Comment: Salix dominated diverse vegetation close to the river. On uplands away from the river and on S aspects, grass steppe (Poa, Stipa, and Leymus). On N aspects, Larix forest steppe with some areas having more shrubs in the understory.
