Narrative
The fruit from which the seeds were collected from was originally identified as Rubus sp., but was actually Morus alba L. fruit. Correction was noted by Dr. O. Jahn, NCGR-Corvallis, 4/29/1985. Information from Cornucopia, Cultivar Listings, page 392: Small to medium-sized, pure white fruit. Flavor very sweet, with no tartness, however not as sweet as Illinois Everbearing. Like other pure white types it is valued because it does not stain and for its excellent qualitites when dried. Tree medium-sized, spreading, productive. Information from Seed Savers, page 378: Medium size, sweet, white fruit shaped like blackberries. Loved by birds. Large, handsome tree grows moderately to 20-60 feet [6.1-18.29m], depending on soil depth and quality. Drought tolerant once established, but produces much faster, denser growth with irrigation; heavy surface feeder roots. Brought to the U.S. by Felix Gillet to start silkworm culture with the Chinese in Nevada City.
