Environment description: Full sun, moist, but well-drained soils on a 15 to 20% slope 3 meters above a small stream, growing in association with Spiraea sp., Philadelphus pekinensis, Cornus alba, Hydrangea sp., Kalopanax pictus, Acer sp. and others.

Narrative

Large evergreen tree-form plant with unevenly spreading branches, 6.5 meters tall; leaves are large, evergreen, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, slightly cupped with indumentum on the midrib beneath; leaves range in size from 10 to 20 cm long; bark is grayish-brown and slightly exfoliating in thick strips showing lighter colored bark beneath.
