Narrative
Winter hardy, deciduous shrub. May grow 16' in height. Leaves ovate, 3" in length. Leaf tip sharply acuminate. Margin sharply and finely serrate, with dark green upper surface and winged petiole. Flowers white, bloom mid-May. Fruit 1/2" long, bluish-black drupe, ripening in September. Attractive purplish-red fall color. Used in farmstead and field windbreaks; wildlife recreation, and surface mine plantings. Adapted to wide range of soils.
