Narrative
This species of hazelnut is well distributed in Japan. Geographical distribution is roughly the same as Corylus heterophylla, but it is less abundant because of stricter ecological requirements. For good growth, the species requires high humidity, adequate soil moisture, fertile soil rich in organic matter, and slight acidity. The species grow as shrubs, 3 to 5 meters in height. The husk constricts into a tube above the nut, resembling the beaked filbert of North America so much that it is regarded as the Asiatic representative of Corylus cornuta. The nuts are generally conical, in clusters of 1 to 5, and enclosed in tubular husk. They are quite homogeneous in size, shape, and shell thickness. C. sieboldiana is very cold hardy, able totolerate temperatures below -480C under snow cover. Furthermore, the extensive underground system allows it to outcompete other species and form dense thickets. Often, the species is a pioneer in the succession of species after forest fires.
