Narrative

The black shank resistant cigar line Beinhart, a breeding line Bel 66-11, and the black shank resistant cultivars Burley 37, Burley 49, and Va 509 were used in a modified backcross scheme to develop Ky 17. It is highly resistant to the diseases TMV, wildfire, and black root rot. Ky 17 has medium resistance to fusarium wilt and black shank, and is classified as tolerant to the tobacco etch and tobacco vein mottling viruses. (Collins et al. 1978. Crop Sci 18:694)
