Narrative
High oleic acid (C18-1) mutant of the spring canola vairety Westar produced by chemical mutagenesis. Imbibed seed treated with 60 mM EMS for 6 hrs. Greenhouse grown M1 seed gown; self pollinated to M2. M2 seed field planted to produce M3 seed. Fatty acid analysis performed on M3 seed. This line (A129) with more than 75% oleic acid was selected and advanced to M7 under selection for high oleic. Breeder seed from M8. Trial data indicates susceptibility to sclerotinia stem rot, black leg and stem canker but resistance to white rust. Seed fatty acid content is affected by temperature during development: low temperature favors desaturation and high temperatures increase the level of monounsaturates.
