Environment description: In moist rocky soil among broad-leaved trees and shrubs.
Comment: Single-trunked tree, ca 8.0 m tall [Approximately 100 years old, and 8 x 4 m, according to the published USDA Plant Inventory, but not Jefferson's typed trip reports]. Flowers dark pink. Leaves glossy. A very nice shaped old tree, perhaps cultivated, growing on slope near train tracks. 90 seeds collected. The accession is documented by herbarium vouchers. NOTE: The published Plant Inventory record states that this is wild, but internal records suggest that this was in doubt. It also lists the plant's size as 8 x 4 m, and that the tree was about 100 years old, but the width does not appear in Jefferson's typed records.
