Narrative
Dioecious perennial; stems numerous from woody rootstock, prostrate to climbing, to 75 cm long; tendrils slender, long; flowers rarely monoecious, pale yellow; fruit ellipsoid, densely covered with retrorse aculeae on a thick, hard base, grayish green with longitudinal dark green bands when ripe, to 3 cm long, slightly bitter when young, non bitter and tasty when ripe.
