Environment description: Broadleaved evergreen forest. Steep rocky slope, deeply weathered granite. Southwest-facing.
Associated species: Quercus glauca (listed as Cyclobalanopsis glauca); Menispermum dauricum; Holboellia coriacea; Liquidambar formosana.
Comment: Small tree, ca 5 m to 6 m tall, DBH 10 cm. Leaves five lobed, 6 cm long, 9 cm to 10.5 cm wide. Spread ca 7.6 m, DBH 23 cm. No branches to 3 m. Leaves variable in size and shape, very broad oblong to broadly obovate, often with prominent acuminate/mucronate tip, leathery. Leaf size: 11.5 cm to 13 cm at broadest point/width; length 16.5 to 18 cm including acuminate tip. Petiole 2 cm to 2.5 cm. Upper surface semi-glossy, green, with brown adpressed hairs. Acuminate tip to 4 cm long. Stems dark brown, glabrous; lenticels tan to light brown.
