Environment description: Full sun and apple orchards in river valley in mountains.
Comment: Fruit is small, brown, turns black when edible. Trees and leaves resemble Pyrus pashia, but fruit much larger. Grafted trees scattered in this region. May be a large-fruited selection of wild P. pashia, or an interspecific hybrid.

Narrative
Pyrus sp. 'Khapa'. Scions collected from cultivated tree by M. Thompson and D. Brenner on 24 November, 1988 in Pakistan (Northwest Frontier, Swat District) in village of Shin (1 km south of Baghderai, about 44 km north of Mingora). Tree is growing beside the road to Mingora, in a river valley at 1250 m elevation; Latitude 35 00' N, Longitude 72 28' E. Collectors note 'Fruit is small, brown, and turns black before edible. Tree and leaves resemble Pyrus pashia, but the fruit is much larger. Grafted trees are scattered in this region. This may be a large-fruited selection from the wild Pyrus pashia, or possibly an interspecific hybrid.' - Collection notebook, 1988.
