Narrative
Type = French Hybrid. Per French and American Hybrid Producers, pg 177: "Growing tip: cobwebby. Young leaves: glabrous, copper. Leaf: small, cuneiform-truncate, 247-3-46; lateral sinuses 30, the upper sinuses narrow with overlapping lobes; folded, glabrous; petiolar sinus more or less closed; teeth convex, average. Shoot: ribbed, glabrous, purple where exposed to sun. Cluster: medium, cylindrical, sometimes winged, somewhat loose; berries round, small, blue-black, pulpy. While grown on a small scale before 1939 in France, de Chaunac did not become a commericial variety becuase it was considered to lack vigor and suffered from poor fruit set. However, de Chaunac has proved to be a successful variety in the eastern United States and Canada. It was named for Canadian enologist Adhemar de Chaunac. In North America this early ripening variety is vigorous and productive. It is rated winter hardy in New York. In France it was considered to have a good practical resistance to downy mildew but was susceptible to anthracnose in the Loire Valley."
