Description:
The large-seed Virginia-type peanut cultivar 'Gregory' (PI 608666, Reg no. CV-62) was hybridized with the wild species A. diogoi accession GK 10602 (PI 276235) to produce sterile, triploid interspecific F1 hybrids. Cuttings of the sterile triploid were treated with 0.2% colchicine solution to the double the chromosome number and restore fertility at the hexaploid level. Hexaploids were allowed to self-pollinate for 11 generations until reversion to the tetraploid was suspected and supported by flow cytometry results.
