Narrative
Morus alba is an introduced species into the U.S. and is highly prolific and considered invasive in many parts of the U.S. This accession represents genetics sampled from central Iowa (Story and Boone Counties) that are available for research purposes. Samples acquired had BRIX readings (3 reps of 5 fruits each) ranging from 9.2-17.2 for mature (black/soft) fruits with fruits generally less than 1.0" in length with average lengths of 0.5". Specimens numbers #1 and #9 had the highest average BRIX ratings of 16.5 and 17.2, respectively. All specimens with rather shiny, glabrous leaves on the upper surfaces with lobing variable throughout the canopy but generally higher lobing found on vigorous sprouts/shoots. Majority of specimens sampled were less than 60' in height. The largest specimen sampled was approximately 18" DBH with the average specimen sampled measuring approximately 10" DBH.
