Narrative
AAR6: Andean abiotic resilient (AAR) common bean germplasm lines AAR1 to AAR7 were developed from an international bulk breeding effort with the goal of improving abiotic stress tolerance, combined with disease resistance, through increasing genetic richness. These lines represent unique sources of climate resilience selected by USDA-Agriculture Research Service (ARS) in Puerto Rico, the Agricultural Research Council in South Africa, or the USDA-ARS in Washington State, with subsequent selection in Puerto Rico for tolerance against multiple stresses including drought, high ambient temperature, low N soil fertility, and root rot. The resulting seven lines all possess drought tolerance, while AAR6 has a moderate level of heat tolerance. AAR6 (Reg. No. ___, PI ___) is a dark red kidney exhibit moderate heat tolerance. AAR6 showed moderate ashy stem blight resistance, and some tolerance to the root rot complex. All seven lines exhibit early flowering and maturity, a type I compact determinate bush growth habit, and a rapid and definitive switch from vegetative to reproductive development. These characteristics associated with escape are also associated with resistance mechanisms in warmer, drier climates.
