Narrative
‘Amigos’ is a hard red winter wheat that was released primarily for its high grain yield potential under both irrigated and dryland conditions across a wide range of environments in Texas. It is resistant to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Erikss.), stripe rust (caused by P. striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Erikss.), and stem rust (caused by P. graminis Pers.:Pers f. sp. tritici Erikss. & E. Henn.). Molecular marker genotyping results indicate that Amigos carries Lr37, Lr68, and Lr77 for leaf rust, Yr17 for stripe rust, and Sr38 for stem rust resistance. It is resistant to Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)] but susceptible to greenbug [Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)] biotype E. Amigos has large seeds, high grain volume weight, and good milling and bread-baking quality attributes. It is late in maturing and taller than most recent and popular TAM wheat cultivars in Texas but with strong straw. Amigos is erect during the juvenile plant growth stage and is green at the boot stage. It lacks anthocyanin in both the coleoptile and stem, and has yellow the anthers. Amigos does not have a waxy bloom (stems and flag leaves at boot stage) with hollow stem internodes, erect and twisted flag leaves, and erect peduncles. It has an oblong, dense, and inclined spike with white glumes at maturity. The glumes are narrow in length and medium in width, with a wanting shoulder and an acuminate beak of medium width. It has hard, red kernels of oval shape with a medium-size germ, rounded cheeks, and a non-collared medium-sized brush.
