Description:
R19-42848 is derived from the hybridization between soybean breeding lines R12-2237 and R12-519. R12-2237 is a University of Arkansas System – Division of Agriculture Research & Extension Center conventional MG V breeding line that originated from the cross R01-52F × R01-4353, of which R01-52F has shown drought tolerance under rainfed conditions. R01-52F is derived from the cross R93-5455 × Minsoy (PI 548389). R93-5455 is derived from the cross Jackson (PI 548657) × PI 416937, of which Jackson has reported nitrogen fixation-related tolerance to drought stress. PI 416937 has shown the slow canopy wilting trait under drought conditions which is a result of reduced water loss at the high vapor pressure deficit in contrast to most soybean genotypes. R01-4353 is a high-yielding, drought-tolerant breeding line developed by the University of Arkansas System – Division of Agriculture Research Extension Center derived from the cross 93705-35-1 × PI 227557, of which the latter has the drought tolerant nitrogen fixation trait. R12-519 is a high-yielding conventional MG V breeding line derived from the cross ‘Osage’ (PI 648270) × N02-7002. Osage is a MG V high-yielding cultivar released by the University of Arkansas System – Division of Agriculture Research & Extension Center and derived from the cross Hartz 5545 × KS4895 (PI 595081). The breeding line N02-7002 was developed by the USDA-ARS and derived from the cross Cook (PI 553045) × Anand (PI 614732). The initial cross was made in the summer of 2014 in Fayetteville, AR. The F1, F2, F3, and F4, plants were grown in Fayetteville, AR in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. Individual F4 plants were selected at maturity and threshed separately. In 2019, F4:5 lines were grown and evaluated in 3-m single-row progeny rows in Stuttgart, AR. Visual selections were made based on pod load, yield potential, agronomic traits, and overall plant uniformity at maturity. R19-42848 was selected from progeny row number 42848 as an experimental line, and seeds were bulk-harvested for subsequent yield trials and drought tolerance evaluations.
