Environment description: Edge of N-S forest road below Quercus and conifer plantation trees, only found on uphill (exposed) and not downhill side of road. Growing in 25 to 50 percent shade. [Note: road does not appear to be north-south, according to aerial imagery.] Soil is mixed, often gravel and organic matter over rocky substrate. Slope: 20 to 30 degrees. Aspect: East.

Associated species: Quercus mongolica; Cornus controversa; Fraxinus mandshurica; Acer pseudosieboldianum; Betula costata; Prunus maackii; Lespedeza maximowiczii; Artemisia vulgaris; Sambucus racemosa.
Comment: Spreading to upright , multistemmed shrub. Height 2 to 3 m; spread 3 m. Leaves typical for species, most with a leaf splotch disease, still green. Majority of shrubs lacking fruits; still green and not dehiscing when found. Very common and uniform; seeds collected from five plants.
