Environment description: Secondary forest along ridgeline trail; low canopy of Quercus and other trees. Growing in 50 percent shade. Rocky and gravelly soil with organic matter layer. Slope: 10 degrees. Aspect: Northwest.

Associated species: Quercus mongolica; Prunus maackii; Malus baccata; Viburnum opulus var. sargentii [listed as V. sargentii]; Acer tschonoskii subsp. koreanum.
Comment: Short, multistemmed and spreading tree. Height 3 m; Spread 3 m; DBH less than 2 cm. Most leaves fallen from tree already; petioles long and green; margins coarsely serrate. Seeds with prominent ridges and veins. Rare to occasional; seeds collected from two plants.
