Narrative
Three Upland cotton lines** that are resistant to reniform and root-knot nematodes were developed and released by the USDA-ARS in 2024. The three lines each contain simple genetic markers for the respective genes responsible for nematode resistance. In controlled environmental assays, the three lines reduced reniform and root-knot nematode eggs by an average of 84 and 97%, respectively. In field studies, the three lines outyielded commercial varieties by 12 to 20%, and possessed fiber quality equal to or greater than those of commercial varieties. The release and registration of these three cotton lines with genetic markers will provide breeders with agronomically elite germplasm that is resistant to both reniform and root-knot nematodes which, in turn, will also greatly reduce the severity of the Fusarium wilt disease caused by race 1.

Description:
The three germplasm lines, USDA-ARS-GMD2427, USDA-ARS-GMD2442, USDA-ARS-GMD24141, are tetraploid trihybrids, G. arboreum/G. hirsutum/G. aridum (AADD). These germplasm lines were developed by crossing diploid G.arboreum (AA) accession A2-190 (PI 615699) as the female parent and a hexaploid bridging line (AADDDD), G. hirsutum cultivar NC8/G. aridum accession G 248, as the male parent. The hybrids were backcrossed twice to MD 51ne and once to MD 25.
