Narrative
The three germplasm lines were selected in F5 progenies and were evaluated at seven locations during 2017 through 2020. In all trials, the three lines had significantly higher fiber strength compared with checks, 5% to 25% higher than the high fiber quality check, MD 15, and 10% to 18% higher than commercial checks. Other fiber properties including fiber length, uniformity, elongation, and micronaire were in acceptable ranges. Yield of the three lines was low to moderate compared with the high yielding checks. The three lines had significantly different fiber strength and lint yield among themselves. USDA-ARS-GMD24141 had high fiber strength with yield equivalent to SureGrow 747 and higher than MD 15. This line had intermediate resistance to Fusarium wilt race 4 (FOV4) compared to the susceptible checks and resistant checks. USDA-ARS-GMD24141 is registered with another two sister lines, USDA-ARS-GMD2427 and USDA-ARS-GMD2442. These lines can be used by breeders for genetic improvement of fiber strength and by molecular scientists for identification of high fiber strength genes and their genomic locations.

Description:
The following breeding and selection procedures were used to develop BARBREN 713-32-28, BARBREN 713-32-30, and BARBREN 713-32-38. The crossing sequence was as follows: Gossypium barbadense L. Acc No. GB713 (PI 608139) x Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Acala NemX’; F1 x ‘Acala NemX’; BC1F1 #15 x Stoneville ‘ST474’ (PI 578877); F1 05:76-10 x ‘Deltapine 16’ (NSL 69934); F1 05:145:8 x Stoneville ‘LA887’ (PI 547084); F1 07:1-5 x self; F2 07:1-5:5. Plant F2 07:1-5:5 was crossed with Fibermax ‘FM 966’ to give F1 13A, which was crossed with Phytogen ‘PSC 355’ to give F1 BARBREN 713-32. Four F1 BARBREN 713-32 plants (141B, 143D, 144A, and 149A) were selfed and 20 F2 plants from each were checked for DNA markers.
