Environment description: Growing next to garage and driveway in sandy loam soil. Slope: 5 percent. Aspect: South. Elevation: 1307 feet.

Comment: Tree; height 40 ft, spread 25 ft, DBH 42.5 inches. Bark gray, patchy with moss growing on it, furrows. Fruit marble sized, very hard, with brown hair coating it. Much larger then Tilia kuisiana. Seeds and one herbarium specimen collected from one plant. Photographed. Mother plant collected in Kokonoe Town, on the forest edge from a 10 meter tall tree that was 15 cm in diameter. Original tree was collected ca 30 years ago (1994). This tree has been growing in its current location for last 24 years. This variety has very small distribution and only found in GBIF around the area where this species was collected. Only occurrences of T. mandshurica in Japan are this variety and only found in this part of Kyushu. According to Janowski, D. (2023). Anthropological significance of Tilia trees in Japan. Ecology and Evolution, 13(7), e10303 this species may have been introduced from Korea and planted by buddist temples. Only Tilia in this location so giving it Z provenance, since its wild genotype growing in a cultivated setting. [Arnold Arboretum notes, not USNA.]
