Narrative
The New Rice for Africa (NERICA) varieties were developed from an interspecific hybridization between Oryza sativa (Asian Rice) and Oryza glaberrima (African Rice). This work began in 1992 and through partnerships with AfricaRice, farmers across Africa were able to select lines that met their needs and growing conditions. Based on popularity and performance, the first of 18 upland NERICA varieties was released in 2000. AfricaRice, specifically, Monty Jones, earned the World Food Prize in 2004 for the development of the NERICA varieties as well as several other international awards. These upland NERICA varieties have been widely adapted by farmers in many parts of Africa due to their early maturity and tolerance to major stresses of the African environment.
