HA-DM17 ((Pl37Pl37) is a BC1F3-derived BC1F4 confection maintainer selection from the cross of CONFSCLB1//CMS CONFSCLB1/Helianthus annuus accession PI 435417 developed for resistance to DM. CONFSCLB1 (PI 688028) is a confection BC1F3-derived BC1F4 maintainer selection from the cross of HA 441/ROM PH//HA 442/HA 441/4/CONF/5/CONF. The line was released by the USDA-ARS and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2006 and is susceptible to DM. The CMS CONFSCLB1 was developed by substituting the nuclear genome of CONFSCLB1 into the background of a wild annual species H. petiolaris (CMS PET1). The wild H. annuus accession (PI 435417) originally collected in Texas in 1976 was identified as resistant to new P. halstedii races in 2005. HA-DM17 was developed using the backcross breeding method and DNA marker assisted selection for the Pl37 gene introgressed from wild H. annuus PI 435417. The cross between CMS CONFSCLB1 and PI 435417 was made in 2015 and the selected resistant F1 plants were backcrossed to CONFSCLB1. In the BC1F2 population, a total of 188 plants were first screened using SNP marker C4_5738736 on chromosome 4 linked to Pl37. Thirty four plants were identified as homozygous at the marker locus and were further confirmed by an additional three markers, C4_5351853, C4_5672805, and C4_5675767 linked to Pl37. No segregation was observed in the DM testing of the selected BC1F2-drived BC1F3 families, further confirming the homozygous nature of the Pl37 locus. The selected BC1F3 families were grown in the field nursery at Glyndon, MN during the summer of 2023. The harvested BC1F4 seed formed HA-DM17 harboring the Pl37 gene verified by DM greenhouse testing in the spring of 2024. HA-DM17 is immune to the most predominant and virulent P. halstedii races, 700, 707, 714, 730, 734, 770, and 776. Plant height of HA DM17 was 157 cm compared to 132 cm for CONFSCLB1, and flowers in 65 days after planting compared to 75 days for CONFSCLB1.
