Environment description: Mixed evergreen and deciduous moist to wet forest in part shade to full sun. From the associated taxa, this site can be quite wet during the growing season; however, it was dry during this collection time; likely due to extended drought. Slope: 0 percent. Aspect: South.

Associated species: Cyrilla racemiflora, Pinus palustris, Acer rubrum, Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, Ilex coriacea, Quercus laurifolia, Smilax sp., Lyonia lucida, Cliftonia monophylla, Ilex glabra, Nyssa sylvatica, Symplocos tinctoria, Aronia arbutifolia, Magnolia virginiana, Pinus taeda, Hypericum sp., Vitis rotundifolia (listed as Muscadinia rotundifolia), Vaccinium darrowii, Solidago sp., Yucca sp., Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Ilex opaca, Carya glabra, Quercus falcata, Mitchella repens, Elephantopus sp., Lycopodiella alopecuroides, Smilax laurifolia, Saccharum sp., numerous grass species, Carex sp., and other wetland taxa.
Comment: The plants in this area were upright to spreading, loosely branched, multi-stemmed, evergreen large shrubs to small tree with an irregular rounded appearance. These plants ranged from 3-5 meters tall x 2-3 meters wide. Leaves are thick, shiny, and evergreen ranging from oblong, oblanceolate to lanceolate; they are generally 1.5 to 4 cm long with entire margins or sometimes a few sharp teeth above the middle. Fruits are bright red, round berries that are somewhat dull; they range from 5-8 mm diameter and are borne on a short pedicel. Common. Seed collected from 15 plants. [Note: one of the plants in this population produced yellow fruit (Lowei Group) and was collected as cuttings under field collection number 2024RJLFL-008; the collector did not indicate whether seed from that individual was included with this material.]
