Narrative
Grape honeysuckle is a woody vine that can climb or sprawl and in nature is often restricted to rather steep slopes or outcroppings. Native to the Midwest, producing unique foliage where the leaf pair just below the flower are joined/clasping around the stem. Subsequent leaf pairs can also be joined around the stem otherwise have short petioles. Both upper and lower leaf surfaces are covered in a waxy bloom that gives the plant a bluish-green cast. Flowers are yellow, blooming in spring, which are attractive to hummingbirds. Fruits are small (e.g. 1/4" diameter) that ripen bright red in fall.
