Environment description: Mostly found in mixed deciduous forest with occasional conifers and evergreen shrubs generally on steep slopes above Tank Creek in rocky well-drained soils in shade to part-shade. The slopes are abundant in decomposed organic matter and runoff soils. Slope: 5 to 30 percent. Aspect: various. Geology: The underlying geology of this area is of Devonian origin and characterized as the Long Run Member of Catskill Formation. It is comprised of gray and grayish-red sandstone and grayish-red siltstone and mudstone in fining-upward cycles. (Source: USGS Pennsylvania Geologic Map Data). Soils: The primary soil type found here is classified as Alluvial Land. In geology, alluvial land refers to areas of land that are formed by the deposition of sediments carried by rivers, or other surface water. EPA Ecoregion (Level III): North Central Appalachians (62). Comment: Plants are multi-stemmed, clumping, broadleaved evergreen shrubs with a dense rounded to broad-rounded habit. Mature plants range in size from 1.5-3.5 meters tall x 1.5-4 meters wide. Leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, and oblong to ovate shape. Leaves are generally dull green above and pale green beneath, thick and coriaceous, and revolute. Leaves range in size from 9-20 cm long x 2-5 cm wide. Fruits are capsules, 1.5-2.5 cm long x 0.3-0.5 cm wide and borne erect in clusters on pedicels with abundant stipitate glandular hairs. Plants are common at this site. Seed collected from approximately 30 plants; approximately 500 to 600 fruits collected.
