Comment: Seed [giving rise to NA 31291] came from two old but healthy trees at the village of Tai Hang in the New Territories. The village elders say that they originated in the delta of Tung River in Kwantung Province, S. China. They were brought from there as saplings by their ancestors some 300 years ago when the village was founded.

Seeds collected from individual NA 31291-HH by Kevin Conrad in November 2021. The parent accession is already once removed from its original wild parent material, but NA 31291-HH is growing with other NA 31291 individuals and away from other Glyptostrobus accessions, so is presumed to represent a "pure" derivative. From the record of the parent accession, NA 31291: Rec'd thru Carl E. Ostrom, Timber Management Res., Forest Service, USDA, Washington, D.C. x 4/25/69 A.J.L. Mitchell to Dr. Carl E. Ostrom: "The Glyptostrobus pensilis seed came from two old but healthy trees at the village of Tai Hang in the New Territories. The village elders say that they originated in the delta of Tung River in Kwantung Province, S. China. They were brought from there as saplings by their ancestors some 300 years ago when the village was founded." Information from "Tree Seed Origin and Quality" form (excerpts): Collector's Name: D.C. Shen. Year collected: 1968. Nation: Hong Kong. State or Province: New Territories. County: Tai Po District. Alt.: 50 m. Lat.: 22 degrees 28'. Long.: 114 degrees 9'. Seed trees ranged 300 years old and to 55 feet high. Distinctive characteristics of seed trees: Bole Good form to 30 ft. 24" D.B.H.
