Description:
‘CPCL 00-6131’ originated from a cross between CL 87-1630, and ‘CP 84-1198’ (Glaz et al., 1994), planned in December 1998 (X98-227) at USSC in Clewiston, Florida. The female parent, CL 87-1630, was developed by USSC breeding program in Clewiston, FL and was formerly a major commercial proprietary cultivar grown on 14.8% of Florida’s sugarcane acreage in 1992 and 1993 when it was the most widely planted sugarcane cultivar in Florida. The male grandparent CP 84-1198 came from a cross between CP 70-1133 and CP 72-2086 from the CP breeding program. The ancestry of this cultivar can be traced back with broader genetic background. Some of the ancestors e.g., CP 63-0588 is a three species hybrid of S. officinarum L., S. spontaneum L. and S. barberi Jeswiet crosses and was the most widely used sugarcane cultivar in Florida from 1975 to 1981.
