Description:
Black Pearl, tested as MSU black bean breeding line B19344, was developed from the cross between two MSU black bean breeding lines B16506/B16507. MSU breeding line B16506 was a black bean derived from the cross: B11363//Alpena*/B09197 made to combine excellent black color retention after canning from B11363 with resistance to new races of anthracnose [caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc. et Magnus) Lams.-Scrib] (Padder et al., 2017). B16506 exhibited upright architecture, and very high yield performance. B16507 was derived from the cross B12720/Zenith intended to combine the excellent color retention of Zenith with additional yield potential and efficient dry down at maturity. The purpose of the final cross was to combine desirable agronomic traits with exceptional color retention after processing while maintaining anthracnose resistance.
