Narrative
‘Denali’ white kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), developed by Michigan State University AgBioResearch was released in 2022 as a midseason, disease-resistant, bush bean cultivar with uniform dry down. Denali was developed with the pedigree breeding method to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease, agronomic, and quality traits. In 8-yr of field trials, Denali yielded 3500 kg ha−1, flowered in 37 d, and matured in 97 d on average. Plants averaged 46 cm in height, with a lodging resistance score of 1.3 and seed size of 62 g 100 seed−1. Denali combines high yield potential with midseason maturity in a white kidney seed type. Denali has outyielded ‘Beluga’ by 13% across 8 yr and matured 5 d earlier. It is well adapted to the irrigated production systems on coarse-textured soils where kidney beans are typically grown in Michigan and the Upper Midwest. Denali possesses resistance to virus, susceptible to anthracnose, is comparable to other white kidneys in tolerance to common bacterial blight (CBB) and white mold and was significantly more tolerant to root rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum than ‘ND Whitetail’. Seed size of Denali (0.62 g) is slightly smaller than ‘Snowdon’ (0.69 g) and equivalent size to seed produced by other white kidney varieties. Seed of Denali meets industry standards for packaging and canning quality in the white kidney bean seed class.

Description:
Denali was derived from the cross of K11917/Snowdon made in 2013. The MSU breeding line K11917, derived from the cross of K04607/USWK-CBB-17, is an upright bush white kidney bean with longer maturity and resistance to CBB [caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye]. derived from the USWK-CBB-17 grandparent (Miklas et al., 2006). Snowdon is a white kidney bean cultivar released by Michigan State University (Kelly et al., 2012) with high yield potential, early-season maturity, and desirable agronomic and canning quality traits. Snowdon also possesses a larger seed size with a pronounced kidney shape compared to K11917. The purpose of this cross was to maintain the excellent yield and agronomic performance of Snowdon while improving seed shape, extending maturity to midseason to enhance yield potential, and broaden the overall disease resistance.
