Environment description: Patch of deciduous forest among Cryptomeria and hinoki cypress plots, above narrow road. Growing in 1/2 to 3/4 shade. Soil: Gritty, rocky with organic layer atop. Slope: 45°. Aspect: Southwest. Elevation: 1500 feet.

Comment: Trees tall, upright to spreading; maintaining a vase-shape habit but more speading than typically seen in cultivation, and with less included branching; few low branches present. Height 22 m; Spread 7 m; DBH 37 cm. Bark typical; gray with patches of irregular, round, orange flakes. Leaves typical; lanceolate 4.5 x 2 cm, hints of autumn color (yellow to brown). Small ovoid, green nutlets, 4-5 mm. Seed collected from 2 plants. Traditionally used to make fine furniture and cabinets, and for making wooden tools used to make mochi.
