Environment description: Heavily deer-browsed oak (Quercus mongolica var. crispula) forest below summit of Mt. Fuji. Oak wilt severely affecting health of the oak canopy above, while deer have eradicated the Sasa in the understory. Growing in half-to-three quarters shade. Soil: Weathered volcanic ash from eruption 300 years before, mixed with rich organic matter. Slope: 20°. Aspect: Southeast. Elevation: 4820 feet.

Comment: Narrow, upright trees, typically single- but occasionally multi-stemmed. Height 10 m; Spread 3 m; DBH 13 cm. Bark orange to brown, peeling in irrgular flakes and often bearing prominent, dark horizontal lines that trace the entire circumference of the stem, typically at intervals of 20-30 cm. Leaves typical for the species, green, some undulations. Fruit ovoid, 1.5 cm wide by 2.5 cm long; greenish yellow at base turning peach to pink at apex, stylar beaks persisting. Seed collected from 6 plants.
