Environment description: Bowl near the top of a small valley above Cryptomeria plantation; very little ground layer due to deer browse and dense shade. Growing in 3/4 shade. Soil: Rich, black soil; rocks. Slope: 30°. Aspect: Northeast. Elevation: 1534 feet.

Associated species: Lyonia ovalifolia; Stachyurus praecox; Carpinus laxiflora; Hydrangea hirta; Prunus buergeriana; Styrax obassia; Carpinus tschonoskii; Cryptomeria japonica; Magnolia obovata; Acer rufinerve; Clethra barbinervis; Corylus sieboldiana.
Comment: Tall, narrow trees, with leaves and fruits just at upper canopy. Height 17 m; Spread 7 m; DBH 37 cm. Bark brown to gray, peeling in thin vertical strips; many trees with twist in the bole. Leaves typical, green, slight scruff on the abaxial veins. Green to gray nutlets borne in brown, hop-like fruits; infructescences 5-6 cm long; collected very high up in canopy where the light was available. Seed collected from 2 plants.
