Environment description: Plants along boardwalk that cut through the eastern edge of Tambara Marsh. Growing in full sun to light shade. Soil: Marsh/muck. Elevation: 3919 feet.

Associated species: Clethra barbinervis; Ilex crenata; Elliottia paniculata; Viburnum furcatum; Magnolia salicifolia; Betula pendula subsp. mandshurica [as B. platyphylla]; Sasa kurilensis [as S. kurilensis var. hirta].
Comment: Low-branching, multi-stemmed shrubs, knitted together with other shrubs (particularly Clethra barbinervis and Ilex crenata); healthier and larger than found in upland site (collection 001). Height to 1.5 m; Spread to 2 m. Young stems yellowish green turning reddish brown with age. Some leaves with hints of reddish purple. Capsules green within infructescence. Seed collected from ca 5 plants. Japanese name is sneeze plant (not sure why).
